In jest

Filed under: Finished Objects, Knitting — Tags: , — sweensie @ 8:24 am

My sisters boyfriend requested a hat from me before Christmas, for when he goes snowboarding.  He wanted to be able to stand out on the slopes, so that his mates could identify him, as its hard to make out who is who.

I gave my sister a few patterns for him to look at, and he chose the Jestor Hat by Woolly Wormhead

and I just so happened to have a skein of the orangy Debbie Bliss yarn that was also used in the pattern, and he approved this as well.  (Can’t remember the name of this offhand but I know the yarn is discontinued now)

The hat knit up quickly enough, I was just pained by the large circular needles/ dpns, as I’m more used to using smaller sized needles.  It got a pain at the top where the increases  were happening towards the end and I struggled through the last couple of rounds. Each round I told myself “just ONE more round”

The pattern was a little confusing as it didnt really guide on how many stitches you should end up with etc, but I estimated how much yarn I had left and decided to cast off at just the right time.  Otherwise the points would have been too long.  I did have yarn left, but it was hard to determine just how long the points would be until they were cast off and sewn.  I kitchener stitched them together from the point inwards

Then set the timer on my camera and posed. This was the best of a bad lot, believe you and me ;-)

Fortunately, he loved the hat and even agreed to pose for me in it.

I gave my sister some bells to take away with them in case he decided he wanted bells sewn on the points for added interest!!

Edited to add: The yarn is Debbie Bliss Maya. Had to log into my ravelry page to find out!!

How to wipe out a weekend

We’ve had a busy last few days, well mainly the weekend just gone. We took Monday off work to recover. Friday night we had my father in laws retirement party and I’m ashamed to say that while we fell out the door at 1.30, my parents in law lasted til 3.30!

Saturday then we had to get ourselves together in order to cook for our nieces christening on Sunday.

We made cold Chinese noodles, coconut rice, coleslaw, goats cheese tomato and olive tartlets, 2 types of potato salad, top hats, and 2 lots of my brown bread.

No idea who nicked those two tartlets there in the middle, maybe it was ghosts??

Sunday was devoted to the christening, and feeding the hoards, and was another late night. Monday we managed to make it back as far as my parents place where we brought leftovers for lunch.  Didn’t get back to our own place for some chilling until late afternoon.

As a result, the amount of knitting time was seriously affected, both from lack of time and lack of energy.  Ive only just gotten back into it last night.  I’d turned the heel late last week and last night I picked up the stitches on the other side of the heel and started into the decreases while watching Lost. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Talking of Lost, I think we are the only people on the planet, and certainly in Ireland, who have never followed it. We are remedying that now, very slowly, we have the first box set and are working our way through it.  We are onto the 4th disc of 7. So far so good.

I enjoyed it last night. I think I could easily sit and watch episode after episode but my DH gets edgy doing it like that and likes to break it up…hence the slow going as we both want to watch it together!

A Sock for my Father in Law

I bet you can quess what I used here as a backdrop to the sock photos ;-)

This is a very satisfying knit so far. I’ve just finished the deacreases for the heel arch and am on the home straight now.  Haven’t had much of a chance to knit on it the last couple of days but every chance I can, I whip it out and do a row or two!

There are errors in the pattern;after you divide for the heel flap it asks you to slip one knit one on both sides of the heel flap which just wasnt going to work for me, so on the wrong side I slipped one, then purled to the end.

I did try it and it just went wonky so consulted a couple of other patterns and had to rip back a couple of rows.

When you are working your arch decreases on the first row you should knit to the last 3 sts, then ssk, k1, which is fine, but on the other side it gets you to ktog first without knitting one first. does that make sense to you? So to rectify this, on needle 3, k1 first then k2tog. Otherwise it makes it look a little bit strained. The rest of the pattern seems fine, but I havent gotten to the toe yet ;-)

Oh and the yarn I’m using has been sitting in my stash FOREVER.   Got it early on thinking that it would make some nice socks for my dad but attempted it a couple of times and always thought it just seemed so thin compared to other sock yarn, but I have been very pleasantly surprised by it. So much so that I am going to buy some more of it for my Dads next pair.

Its Lang yarns Jawoll superwash and is comprised of 75% new wool, 18% nylon and 7& acrylic. This colourway is 50842

Oranges and apple green

Over at Claires crafty blog, I won a giveaway!!

I was so excited as I’d never won in a giveaway before.

It arrived via my brother delivering it from my folks place, the day before yesterday.  I couldn’t blog about it until now because I couldn’t get a decent picture until yesterday due to lighting issues.

I love this material! Amy Butler is one of my favourite fabric designers, and orange is one of my favourite colours :-D

And that wasn’t all she sent, she sent a lovely little zip pouch which will be great for all the notions you acquire as a knitter or sewer…and some great patterned twill tape (is that how its described?)

Claire has an Etsy shop, and also a Folksy shop (which is linked on her blog) and I know she has more knitting needle rolls in her etsy shop, so go and check her out!

Thanks a lot Claire!!

Tangeled Yoke

Well its the end of September, and the nights are coming in earlier and earlier, the days are starting off dark, and foggy, of recent times, and the chill is definately in the air in the evenings.

What a good time to work on the Tangled Yoke Cardigan

!

I’ve been working on this now for about 2weeks, had a few hiccoups at the start, got through the wide ribbing, onto the stocking stitch part and I’m now almost finished the increases.

The pattern is cast on from the bottom up and it includes the 2 front sections and the back section all in one go, with faux seams for the sides.

It was a bit daunting at first casting on 200 plus stitches, especially when I realised I had made mistakes halfway through a row (on more than one occasion gulp) and having to frog back to fix it, but its a comforting knit at this stage and I’m looking forward to the challenge of the cabling at the top.

I’m trying to keep at it so that I will actually have a FO within the next few weeks, but Saturday I only got about 5 rows knit, and that included frogging 3/4 way back on one as I forgot to do my increases…I knew when I started the row that it was an increase row but somehow I was at the end of the row and there had been no increases made….ribbit. However, I made up for it yesterday and at point of tying this, I’m actually about 6 rows away from putting the body aside in order to start on the sleeves. Yay!

I know also that I won’t have enough yarn for the whole thing so I may have to make a plea for help on Ravelry….or else get yarn from a different dye lot.
Anyone have this dye lot?  SH143,  LOT13L4

Who likes hats?

I do.

I love hats.  I’m one of those lucky people that hats generally suit. I have millions of hats in my winter wardrobe and bought 2 hats on honeymoon, one of which was lost at the electric picnic :-( but replaced by my darling boy, who wore it for the rest of the EP! It suited him, what can I say?

ANYway, I’m rambling.

Heres a hat:

and heres another hat:

What, you mean they look a bit strange?
Strange in what way?

Oh that kind of strange.
Thats because, they are not destined for heads of humans, or even dolls, or aliens…they are destined for use on the top of a little bottle….

The Irish Big Knit is something thats happening in Ireland for the very first time this year and us Irish knitters are determined to make put our stamp of approval to the campaign.

Here’s some official blurb about it:

“The Big Knit is a campaign where Innocent, Topaz and the charity Age Action join forces to help older people in Ireland keep warm during the cold winter months. We will put little woolly hats on our smoothie bottles in Topaz stores from 5th November 2008, and for every hat-wearing smoothie sold, innocent and Topaz give €1 to Age Action.

The money raised from The Big Knit will go towards providing support to older people, including care and repair programmes and advice on how to keep houses warm during the winter.

We’ve set ourselves a big target of 20,000 little woolly hats as this means we’ll raise a brilliant €20,000 for Age Action and we’d love your help getting us to that target”

One of the great things about Ravelry is that it helps us all connect with each other. No sooner had I been contacted by Juliet from Big Knit to ask for our help, Stitchlily had already been on to it and had set up the Irish big knit 2008 group. I contacted Stephanie to see if she would be up for organising a Knit-Out in Dun Laoighre, to find that she had also been on the ball and had contacted Innocent herself!

So, there will be many little needles clacking away making little hats between now and then, and if you are around on Sunday the 12th of October between 12 and 4 in The Peoples Park, Dun Laoighre, come along and join us for a little Knit-Out
It should be good fun, lots of chat, lots of knitting, lots of hats, hey, bring your own hat!

If you are a beginner knitter or a non knitter who would like a bit of a push start into knitting, come along also, it will be an ideal opportunity to learn, and to practice. There will be spare wool, and spare needles.

And maybe cake.

Mossy jacket

It looks like Im going backwards on the items Ive made my nephew!

(sorry about the photos, they were taken at night)

This is the second one I made him and it was gifted at the baby shower, along with a pair of matching booties and a non-matching hat.

The hat will be shown at a later stage, all I can say at the moment is that I saw it on him yesterday and my sister told me that its the only one thats stayed on his head! She says when he moves his head from side to side, the others fall off immediately, but this one stays on him!! Yayy!

Cardigan

Pattern: Mossy Jacket

Yarn: Jaegar Baby Merino (no link, sorry)
Yarn Edges: Rowan Calmer
Needles: 5 & 5.5mm

Sizes: 0-6 months

Booties
(I didnt do the crochet flower)

Pattern: Drops knitted booties with crochet flower

Yarn: Jaegar Baby Merino
Crocheted edge: Rowan Calmer
Needles: ?5mm, can’t remember

The booties took a long time to make, for items so small. Im not sure that I’d use the pattern again, because of that, and because also R says that they dont stay on his feet….but I suppose they are still a little big for him at the moment which may have a part to play in that.
