Counting the Hen

5 weeks to go til D-Day.
Not that I’m counting or anything.
Everyone else around me seems to be counting for me.  I have lost count of how many people over the last week have asked me- how many weeks to go then???
People then ask me if I’m nervous (no) and then scared (no). Some of them say there is still time to back out (no).
Its as if people want me to be nervous about the whole thing (I’m not okay?!) and are a bit purplexed that I’m not nervous.
Its as if they want me to break down in front of them, shaking and through copious tears, beg them for help.
I’M NOT NERVOUS OKAY??
I AM nervous, however, about this weekend.
My hen party. (Bachelorette party for all you American gals)
My sisters are arranging it.  All I was required to do was hand them a list of names and contact details.
I got told off, by both sisters, seperately, for contacting people to see if they were free that night. So I retreated into knowing nothing.
However, most of my friends have let slip where we are going. Aha!! Then another friend who isn’t going on the hen (she’s getting married very soon after me, she’s enough things to be doing) suggested that perhaps they were all leading me astray and we were in fact going to another destination….
Who knows then?! I’ll fill you in on Sunday….or maybe Monday depending how the head is holding up on Sunday.
One of my sisters said to me the other day, I know that you don’t want to go to a pub and go dancing (???????Show me the beer and the dancefloor people, !!!) so I had to set her straight on that.  I had said that I wanted to do something a little different, thats all. I don’t recall ever saying anything about not having some drink and some dancing…((shiver))
So now I’m quite nervous….
I do know there are no strippers involved.  Thats a relief. Phew. Thank God for that. Don’t know what I would have done with one.

Buttons to that!

Filed under: General Ramblings, Knitting — sweensie @ 4:14 pm

Yay for finding camera to pc cables!!!

Actually, I still didnt find the original one, I hunted around til I found another one that I knew was hiding on me.

So I give you, the still almost finished……

Almost finished, because I don’t like the way the buttons look on it. Buttons have been placed for the photo shoot but not sewn on.

Although I love these buttons, they seem to distract a little from the nice shaping that the cardigan has, so I’m going to have to get some more. Which means actually getting the time to get near a place that sells buttons. Ive seen ones I likes previously so will check them out again.

In the meantime, come and have a worship of these ones with me

How to be brought down to earth-by an almost 5 yr old

Filed under: D Day, General Ramblings — sweensie @ 8:16 pm

We were down with M’s sister and family yesterday and just before we left, after I had said goodbye with his niece D,  I was jokingly showing her the fancy walks I said she must practise for her Flower-girls Duties of walking up the aisle.

You know those kind of walks, the sticking out the bum whilst flouncing, looking side to side… the exaggerated sticking the legs out in front of each other whilst wiggling the hands, - those kind of walks.

After watching me making a fool of myself in the sitting room while she had been colouring happily, she looked at me disdainfully and said……..

“Just go….”

So I did.

Talk about perfect comedy timing!

More wedding things- the wedding list

Please skip reading this if you don’t want to be bored with yet more weddingy stuff!!

We have a wedding list, for the wedding funnily enough! We had very few options of where to have one, so we ended up going to the one place and spent 2 hours putting the bones of a wedding list together, to be completed at some stage when one or both of us had the time and energy (its exhausting stuff actually!)

Then we spent a week waiting to try and access the list, another week talking to the shop about the problems we were having accessing it, them ringing us back, not able to get into it still, them ringing us back, and eventually it was fixed.

We were at the point of saying we would go somewhere else, but at that point we’d already sent out the information with our invites and it would have been a serious hassle to go through all that again.
Apparently someone came over especially from England to sort out our problem, we were the exception of course, to the rule.  no-one else had the problem, just us.

I did finish the wedding list, just yesterday.
(don’t laugh now!) I didn’t find the sunglasses I had seen before, they’d moved the displays to a different location, but I did feel better about the price I was willing to have someone pay for them for me (€50) when I saw some of the other prices for gucci ones etc (€200 plus).
I did however somehow manage to put a totally-not-needed-for-a-laptop-but-would-be-a-seriously-good-yarn-bag laptop case on at a price that I dont think I’d ever pay for a yarn bag on the list and somehow a jewellery box also managed to get itself on there but I think I’ll have to take that one off for definate as thats not really an us present…..
I suppose I could really and realistically use the laptop bag for the laptop and put knitting in the sides of it- it has a cool pull out padded section in the middle for the laptop. It would be a good overnighter bag also.  See? Lots of potential in that little bag! (as I try and justify it to myself…..and its RED!!!!! Red, folks, I love Red) (I also love Green, if you didn’t know that before, and they also had a green one- talk about the internal struggle when I was trying to decide which I liked better!!)(Maybe I should change it to the green one….)(You see what I have to put up with, with myself??)

I got the denby on and a hoover and saucepans and think that I have been through the entire store inside and out at this stage. It was quite difficult actually, as the store didnt really have a huge amount to offer, pretty much nil in the way of electricals, and nothing much in the way of outdoor stuff. As I said before, we were very limited in where we could go and this seemed to be the easiest option.

Phew. Glad thats done now.

I was on the way out and trying to make the 9pm bus when I was coming down the escalators and saw the perfect sun dress with matching bikini that would actually look okay on me, and I had to pause and wonder if it was worth missing my bus for and getting the later one. I even took steps towards the cashier with them in hand then realised that I’d be hanging around for another hour if I  missed it and put them back.
Now its going to be a case of me going back to buy them, them being out of stock, and me searching the entire network of the same department store in the south of Ireland for the same ones….

Edited to add: The jewellery box is taken off the list…..and the laptop/knitting bag, I suppose a knitting bag isn’t really an US present either- now all I need to do is persuade him to knit and THEN he’ll see sense  mwahhahaha evil laugh :-)

AArgh- 6 weeks folks!!

You know, I’m getting married in 6 weeks. Today.

In fact, by now I’d be a married woman.  Hard to believe still!!

We’ve done most things, just have to worry about things like the wording for the mass booklets, what music for the church,
seating arrangements for the reception, and bigger things like what to buy for the honeymoon!!!
The Honeymoon is finally booked and paid for, nothing like leaving it to the last minute eh?
We’re off to San Francisco for about a week, then to Aruba in the Carribean for 2 weeks.
(If there’s any good yarn shops in San Francisco that I would kick myself if I missed, please let me know!!! I’m sure that there won’t be any in Aruba but just in case….anyone any idear?)

So, Ive been told that San Fran can be very misty and can be a bit on the chilly side at times, so we have to try and marry (no pun intended) that with the heat in Aruba.

What to wear then?  Always a big problem for me as I always over-estimate the amount of clothes I need anyway.
However, I spoke with a good friend of mine (who unfortunately can’t come to the wedding as her brother is getting married the same day in New York- can you believe that!) and she has offered her services to come and help me pick out what I need and pack them, and then make a list of what I need to buy to supplement what I already have…

I think this is a great idea. I need someone to “organise” me at the moment!!

I just need now to decide which sock pattern I will be bringing with me, which yarn, and to do a swatch to make sure my gadge is right. Wouldn’t be able to change needles if my gadge is off I dont have them with me!
Talking of socks, did you see that Magknits is off the air at the moment? (I’m nothing if a little late in mentioning this, its been off for a while now. See a very good post here about it)
I’m just hoping that I saved a copy of Jaywalkers somewhere!!!

I’ve misplaced the cable to upload photos to my laptop so unfortunately no pics until I do!

The Bridie band

Filed under: Knitting — sweensie @ 4:30 pm

dsc00082.JPG

I’m on the home stretch with Bridie.
Finally, I’m almost done with it, just in time for a bit of warm weather, and I’ll have to confine her to the wardrobe for a few months.
Although seeing as we’ve just had SNOW, in APRIL, maybe I’ll get a little bit of wear out of her.
I started Bridie waaaay back in oh, could it be, yes it was, November 2006 (the shame!), and have put her down and picked her up and put her down…..until Caroline (blogless) from my Knitting group said she wanted to see it finished and on me. Seeing as she has 2 kids and still manages to finish things very regularly and then wear them to knitting group, she puts me with no kids to serious shame.
So I thought that perhaps I should really try and finish her, as I can’t really justify starting anything else until I do finish her.  Not including my many smaller projects of course lol!
And I really want to start something else, and stick with it this time until the end.
In fact I have several somethings that I want to get stuck into (and maybe have already swatched for something….)

So I brought Bridie with me to Clare and worked on her, finished a sleeve and got about a third of the way through the next sleeve while there, as well as work on my honeymoon wrap for a bit of variety (which I haven’t worked on since I got back, hey I’ve been busy with weddingy things!),
and then stuck with doing a few rows here and a few rows there.

I finished the second sleeve on Sunday, and blocked the body and sleeves on Sunday night- I should have just gone ahead and blocked the body in preparation for working the border but didn’t think of it-duh!

The blocking has made the yarn even softer. Did I tell you what I’m using yet?  I probably did way back when I first started.
I’m using Jaegar Luxury Tweed, which is a 2 ply yarn, one of the ply’s is white and the other is a browny/grey, and it looks lovely knit up. Its composition is 65% merino lambswool and 35% alpaca and its very light and quite soft, softer even with blocking.
I got a pack of this yarn in the knitting and stitching show in Birmingham when we went over in 2006, wow, is it that long ago?
Anyway, last night I started on the band, the instructions have you pin and sew the band in place as you knit, which is actually a great idea as you know exactly where you are going with it.
Thing is, I hit a snag. Not a huge one, but it was late, and I really wanted to get the left side done before I went to bed, and I eventually had to abandon it.

dsc00085.JPG
You see, the left side curves to the left just about the bust area, and the band follows this in its shaping. Whatever way I read the shaping, it just didnt seem right, but I went ahead and did it anyway and I was right–>  it turned to the right instead of the left (as you wear it)

dsc00086.JPG
As I said it was late, and I was tired, and I just couldn’t work it out. actually my brain had declared it had had enough and wanted to shut down for a few hours.  If I was a robot I would have been stuck on the couch until morning in the off position. Sorry, on another planet there lol!
I decided to put it aside until this evening and have another look at it.

As you do, of course, I couldnt stop thinking about it after it went to its little bed in my knitting bag, and the only thing I could think of is that I started the shaping on the wrong side, as in the right side, not the wrong side.

Have I lost you yet ;-)?

I mean maybe I should have started the shaping on the WS, but I started it on the RS.
I need to go and read the pattern again, havent picked it up since I came home, just launched in here.
So, I’ll go and do that, and hopefully I’ll have the finished object ready in time to wear it to knitting on Tuesday next!
Caroline will be so proud tee hee.
